Weekly Schedule
Homework Guidelines
Time Involved
• What nights? Homework is sent home in homework folders on Fridays. Students must return homework by the following Thursday morning.
• Average minutes per evening? Families are free to choose when to complete homework – over the weekend or on weeknights. Homework does not need to take more than 10-15 minutes.
Why give homework?
• To provide a school-to-home connection through math games, common language in math and literacy, and developmentally appropriate books.
• All homework reinforces concepts taught and practiced in the classroom.
Amount of parent involvement and complexity
• Parents have to be involved with reading homework, as most kindergarten students aren’t reading well enough to self-check for errors and comprehension.
• No parent involvement is necessary for math games, as students know how to play them. However, most games will require an additional player (a parent or sibling).
• Parents should try to read to and with students every night, as time allows.
Examples of nightly assignments
• Kindergarten does not have nightly assignments. Weekly homework will consist of:
o A math game that students have learned and practiced in the classroom
o A developmentally appropriate book that your child can independently read to you
o The following optional activities (depending on the week): handwriting practice, a Time for Kids follow-up activity, or a math “home links” activity page
Accountability and follow-up
• Students return homework folders, including math games and books, by Thursday morning. Additional optional homework will be reviewed on an individual basis with some homework going home in Friday folders and other homework going in your child’s portfolio
